Registration delays can have greater influence on smaller geographical areas. Point estimates and the corresponding variances for this analysis were calculated using SUDAAN software (5) to account for the complex sample design of NHIS. Tests for quadratic trends by age were evaluated using orthogonal polynomials. Differences between percentages were evaluated using two-sided significance tests at the 0.05 level. Alcohol use disorder includes a level of drinking that’s sometimes called alcoholism. The map shows the share of all road traffic deaths attributed to alcohol consumption over the national legal limit for alcohol consumption. Many of the risk factors for alcohol dependency are similar to those of overall drug use disorders (including illicit drug disorders). Further discussion on these risk factors can be found on our topic page on drug use. In the chart, we see the relationship between average per capita alcohol consumption – in liters of pure alcohol per year – versus gross domestic product (GDP) per capita across countries. With the change country feature, it is possible to view the same data for other countries.

Although there is no single risk factor that is dominant, the more vulnerabilities a person has, the more likely the person is to develop alcohol-related problems as a result of alcohol consumption. Poorer individuals experience greater health and social harms from alcohol consumption than more affluent individuals. It also includes binge drinking — a pattern of drinking where a male has five or more drinks within two hours or a female has at least four drinks within two hours. In the chart, we see the prevalence of alcohol dependence versus the average per capita alcohol consumption. There is no clear evidence that high overall consumption (particularly in moderate quantities) is connected to the onset of alcohol dependency. The comparison of this map with the previous maps makes clear that heavy drinking is not necessarily most common in the same countries where alcohol consumption is most common.

The U.S. Preventive Service Task Force recommends screening adults for unhealthy alcohol use in primary care settings and providing brief behavioral counseling to those whose drinking exceeds certain weekly, daily, or per-occasion amounts (3). These results show that adults who visited a doctor or health care professional in the past year were as likely as those who had not visited any of these clinical settings to engage in heavy drinking. In addition, there was no association between heavy drinking and current health insurance status.

If your pattern of drinking results in repeated significant distress and problems functioning in your daily life, you likely have alcohol use disorder. However, even a mild disorder can escalate and lead to serious problems, so early treatment is important. Alcohol use disorder is a pattern of alcohol use that involves problems controlling your drinking, being preoccupied with alcohol or continuing to use alcohol even when it causes problems. This disorder also involves having to drink more to get the same effect or having withdrawal symptoms when you rapidly decrease or stop drinking.

These findings are consistent with another recent study that found a larger increase in fully alcohol-attributable death rates among females compared with males (8). In addition to ABVs, many factors may result in inaccuracies of per capita alcohol consumption estimates. These factors are discussed in detail in the AEDS data reference manual on per capita alcohol consumption (Nephew et al. 2004). Increases in deaths from excessive alcohol use during the study period occurred among all age groups. A recent study found that one in eight total deaths among U.S. adults aged 20–64 years during 2015–2019 resulted from excessive alcohol use (9).

This data is based on estimates of prevalence and treatment published by the World Health Organization (WHO).
